Effects of different combinations of treatments with atrazine and urea on weeds and corn yield

Effect of atrazine and urea on nitrogen content and yield of corn and weeds was conducted at Muara experimental farm of Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops in dry season 1982. The results showed that the application of atrazine at the rate of 1 and 3 kg a.i./ha in combination with different rate of urea could suppress population of broad leaved, sedges and annual grasses with weed coverage of 5-30 percent. The atrazine caused slight toxicity on corn from the beginning of growth until 14 days after planting (DAP) and the symptoms disappeared at 20 DAP. Atrazine treatment improved corn growth through enhancement of dry biomass 15-21,59 percent above and significantly different with control. During the field experiment nitrogen lost by weeds was about 81,68 percent of N/kg, and treatment of atrazine at the rate of 1 and 3 kg a.i./ha suppressed it to 64,18 and 96,44 percent respectively (i.e. 29,26 and 2,91 kg of N/ha). Without atrazine, the nitrogen uptake by corn was about 22,41 kg of N/ha, and treatment with atrazine at the rate of 1 and 3 kg a.i./ha increased it to 13,88 and 3,79 percent respectively (i.e. 25,52 and 23,26 kg of N/ha). Without atrazine the grain yield of corn was 20,79 kg/ha, and treatment of atrazine at the rate of 1 and 3 kg a.i./ha increasing yield up to 38,87 and 37,24 percent respectively. The highest yield of corn was found in the combination treatment of atrazine at the rate of 1 kg a.i./ha and 90 kg N/ha i.e. 3910 kg/ha. The grain yield of corn in the other combination treatment were 987 to 3499 kg/ha, and the leat of grain yield found in the untreated plants
