Growth of Imperata on medium of the Air Sugihan histosol and Ciomas alfisol, and its response to glyphosate

Differences in the growth rate of Imperata (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeuschel) on various soil types may influence its response to herbicides. Two experiments were conducted in a greenhouse of the Bogor Research Institute for Estate Crops to study the growth performance of Imperata on a peat soil (Histosol) and on a highly weathered soil (Alfisol) and to determine its response to glyphosate herbicide. Using Air Sugihan peat of South Sumatra and Ciomas Alfisol of West Java as treatments in a completely randomized design, the growth performance of Imperata was assessed on the basis of plant height, number of shoot, and dry weight of plant components. In the second experiment, glyphosate at 0; 0.125; 0.25; 0.50; and 1 kg ai/ha were applied to 3-month-old Imperata grown on peat soil and Alfisol. Results of the experiments showed that the growth of Imperata on peat was better than that on Alfisol, but its response to glyphosate was not significantly different.
