Leaf area estimation in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.)
1991
Sutoro (Balai Penelitian Tanaman Pangan Bogor (Indonesia))
Leaf area measurement is often required in agronomy and physiology research. Leaf area could be measured by automatic areameter. Experiment conducted in location far from these facilities will find difficulties. Simple and more rapid method to estimate leaf area of two sweet potato varieties were studied. Leaf length, width and area of Daya and Topato varieties were observed at one month after planting. Leaf area on sweet potatoes are also observed at 2 months after planting for Daya and Topato varieties with and without fertilizer application. Results of these studies showed that leaf area index could be estimated by sampling of 1 m square plot size. Area of each leaf for Daya and Topato varieties could be estimated by the formula Y=0.8L X W and Y=0.47L X W1 1,1 respectively, were Y=leaf area, L=leaf length, W=maximum leaf width and W1=minimum leaf width.
