Preliminary studies on eutrophication of three lakes near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Three lakes located around Kuala Lumpur, namely Lake Aman, Lake Kundang and Lake Rawang were observed for changes in their trophic status, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, and chlorophyll-a content, and other important quality parameters. Three stations were established for each lake from which samples were taken. Phytoplankton samples were collected and analyzed qualitatively. Total phosphorus was determined using Persulfate Digestion Method followed by the Ascorbic Acid Method. Orthophosphate was analyzed colorimetrically using Ascorbic Acid Method, while chlorophyll-a was determined according to APHA. The results showed that all parameters studied were significantly different except for temperature and nitrate. Lake Aman contained the highest number of phytoplankton species (38 species), followed by Lake Rawang (36 species) and Lake Kundang (10 species). Lake Aman contained the highest total phosphorus and orthophosphate (0.35 and 0.23 mg/l) compared with Lake Kundang (0.06 and 0.03 mg/l) and Lake Rawang (0.12 and 0.08 mg/l). The presence of blue-green algae and high concentration of phosphorus content and chlorophyll-a indicated that Lake Aman suffers from heavy pollution loads.
