A general equation has been developed to predict maize response to P application on a soil of any level residual P or soil P test, by incorporating soil test data an orthogonal polynominal response equation. The present paper purpose is to refine the model by incorporating other variable that determine the soil P supplying characteristics. It was found that the incorporation of parameters of intensity and/or buffer power improved the ability of a soil P test to predict average yield (B0) and linear response (B1) to P application. The improvement was large for Mauna Loa, which had a wider range of buffer power. Buffer power expressed as the square root and/or the long form was included in the best subset model for crop response to P application, however, addition of the parameters, intensity and buffer power, will improve the predictability of the model
