Effect of GA3 application on flowering and seed production in onion [number of tillers and leaves; plant height; seedstalks number and height at the different treatments]
1992
Al-Shdiefat, S.M.M.
Effect of GA3 application at concentration 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 1000 ppm on flowering and seed production of onion was studied at Deir Alla and Al-Khaldieh during 1989/90 growing season. Application of GA3 significantly affected average number of seedstalks, main seedstalks, secondary seedstalks/plant, average number of small sized umbels/plant and seed vigor in Deir Alla. Concentration of 10 ppm produced higher number of seedstalks and main seedstalks/plant, 1000 and 300 ppm gave the highest number of secondary seedstalks/plant; 100 ppm treatment gave the highest number of small umbels/plant; 25 ppm resulted in the highest percent of seed vigor. Stage of plant at GA3 application showed significant effect on average number of umbels; medium size umbel/plants at Al-Khaldieh, and average number of main seedstalks/plant at Deir Alla; furthermore it showed that application at stage one, 45-50 days after planting had better results than that at stage two, after the appearance of about 50% of the seedstalks. Significant interactive effect between GA treatments and stage of plant at GA3 application was observed on average numbers of tillers/plant, secondary seedstalks/plant at Deir Alla and percent of seed vigor at Al-Khaldieh; 1000 ppm GA3 treatment in stage 1 gave the highest number of tillers/plant, secondary seedstalks/plant, umbels and medium-sized umbels/plant, while 400 ppm treatment in stage 1 gave the highest percent of seed vigor in Al-Khaldieh. No significant effects of GA3 application were observed on average number of tillers, leaves/plant, plant height, seedstalks height, average number of umbels, large and medium sized umbels/plant, seed yield, average seed weight/plant, weight of 1000 seed, and seed germination in both locations
