Changes with the season in the number of erythrocytes invaded by Theileria sergenti and packed cell volume of the blood of grazing cattle

The number of erythrocytes invaded by Theileria sergenti was surveyed for cattle grazed on pastures at diverse sites together with packed cell volume of the blood throughout the grazing period at the interval of a month. A total of 158 heifers were used for the survey. They were all treated with flumethrin with the pour-on technique. Blood samples were collected at a month interval from May to November inclusive. The survey for living Haemaphysalis longicornis on the paddock was also carried out using flagging methods. The number of erythrocytes invaded by T. sergenti showed a higher level in September, irrespective of grazing sites. The packed cell volume did not appear to be appropriate as a diagnostic measure for estimation of the number of erythrocytes invaded by T. sergenti. Living larvae emerged on pasture 2 or 3 months after the grazing started. Ticks appeared to winter in a nymph stage and to grow to adult after being fully fed with the blood of animals. The T. sergenti appears to proliferation the blood while animals are grazed on pasture for 4 to 5 months and to decrease toward the end of the grazing period
