Relations of aboveground plant dry weight, leaf area index and their vertical distribution to sward height (SH) were examined in before-grazing canopy of bahiagrass pasture rotationally grazed by Holstein heifers in order to survey a possibility that SH is used as an index of these canopy characteristics. Although the characteristics were in general significantly correlated with SH, their relations were not very close. This indicated that SH is usable just for the rough estimation of the characteristics, but not for the accurate one. However, SH was considered to be a helpful index in the management of rotational grazing system. Using the obtained data, one example of the rotation of cattle in bahiagrass pasture was presented
