Population dynamics of two herds in Misaki feral horses

Misaki feral houses are largely separated into two herds (Komatsu herd and Oogi herd) by their habitats in the breeding season. In general two herds live only in their own habitats (Komatsu area and Oogi area) in summer, but some of horses move between two herds in winter. The present study was carried out to make clear population dynamics, reproduction and correlation of the two herds between 1973 and 1989. Total number of houses in Komatsu herd increased gradually from 1973 to 1984 and thereafter decreased, but that in Oogi herd decreased gradually from 1973 to 1980 and then increased. Changes in number of mares in two herds showed the same trend as those of total number. Changes in number of foals in two herds were very similar to those in number of mares. Those results indicate that main area for reproduction of Misaki feral horses may shift between Komatsu area and Oogi area during the present study period
