A new pummelo cultivar "Hayasaki", originating from Kuchinotsu, Nagasaki, was released by the Kuchinotsu Branch, Fruit Tree Research Station. The cross of "Matou buntan" (Citrus grandis Osbeck) x "Hirado buntan" (C. grandis Osbeck) was made in 1962. Clone has been tested as "Kuchinotsu No.1" since 1974. Registered as "Buntan (pummelo) Norin No.3" in 1986. Also registered based on the Seeds and Seedlings Law of Japan under No.1518 in 1988. Fruit: oblate to pyriform, moderately large, 600-1000g; Rind light yellow, slightly coarse, 18mm thick, and difficult to peel; Flesh greenish yellow, extremely tender, juicy, soluble solids content 12-15%, quality good, 50-100 monoembryonic seeds, self incompatible; Maturing in late December to early January, earlier than "Hirado buntan". Tree: vigorous and upright in young stage, and spreading later; Leaf large with petiole wing, thick; Moderately cold resistant, resistant to citrus scab, susceptible to citrus canker, low incidence of stem pitting (citrus tristeza virus)
