Three alginates formulations of thiobencarb and one of propanil were prepared in laboratory with varying kaolin content. The release rates in water were found to be inversely proportional to the kaolin content and also related to the water solubility of the active ingredient. Four alginate-based formulations of butachlor were likewise prepared with the incorporation of rice straw as a substitute carrier. The alginate, rice straw and kaolin content of the formulation were responsible for the size of the granules and consequently the release rates of the active ingredients. These formulations were studied using radiotracer techniques and gas chromatographic analysis
