Review of the gastropods in tropical Pacific Island streams
1993
Haynes, A.
Most freshwater gastropods found in Pacific island streams belong to the families Thiaridae and Neritidae and these have their origins in Southeast Asia. The genera Fluviopupa and Physastra probably dispersed northwards from Australia. Endemic thiarid species are present on N. Caledonia, W. Samoa and Fiji and endemic species of neritids are found in Hawaii. The neritid genus Septaria has undergone speciation in the South Pacific where at least three species endemic to that region are found. At present there are no freshwater gastropods on Pacific islands that carry human disease
