Antigenotoxic effects of coconut meat, coconut milk, and coconut water

Azaserine, benzo(a)pyrene, dimethylhydrazine, dimethylnitrosamine, methylmethanesulfonate, and teracycline induced the formation of micro-nucleated polychromatic erythrocytes in bone marrow cells of experimental mice, indicating their chromosome breaking effects. These chromosome breaking effects suggest that these substances are genotoxic to bone marrow cells. Their genotoxicity to germ cells was indicated when these substances induced very low fertility index in experimental mice. The chromosome breaking effects of these genotoxins were reduced when homogenized coconut meat was administered simultaneously with each genotoxin. The same effect was exhibited by simultaneously administered coconut milk, and coconut water. Greatest reduction in chromosome breaking effects of the genotoxins was shown with coconut meat and coconut milk from matured coconut (Niyog), and coconut water from young coconut (malakanin). The low fertility index induced by each genotoxin was increased when coconut meat, or coconut milk or coconut water was given simultaneously with each genotoxin. The best enhancement of the fertility index was shown with meat and milk from matured coconut and coconut water from young coconut. Dietary coconut milk and coconut water given as drinking water for 23 days, similarly reduced the genotoxicity of the different mutagens not only in bone marrow cells but also in germ cells
