Seed storage of corn and its influence on crop performance

Seeds with 8-12% MC and stored in sealed containers under ordinary room condition had higher germination percentage than those stored in permeable containers with the same seed moisture. Grains stored with 14 and 16% MC, regardless of the storage containers used, were severely damaged by storage pests. Fungal infection and insect infestation were the primary causes of seed deterioration in sealed and permeable containers, respectively. Poor field performance of plants originating from seeds stored in permeable materials was attributed to poor seed quality. However, corn plants from seeds with 8% MC stored in permeable containers exhibited better plant characteristics and yield components than those which originated from seeds with 10 and 12% MC in similar container. Highest grain yield was obtained from plants that originated from seeds previously stored in sealed containers having the initial moisture contents of 10 and 8 percent
