Yield and yield components of early and full maturing cottons (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Ten early, medium and late maturing cotton cultivars were studied in terms of variability of plant characters and their associations with high seedcotton yield and earliness. Number of sympodial branches, days to first flower bloom, seed index, percent lint recovery and seedcotton yield showed highly significant varietal differences. To a lesser degree, plant height, number of bolls, weight per boll, percent crop harvest 1 and 2 were also significant. BN86-4-1-1, one of the early maturing entries, produced the highest seedcotton yield which was significantly higher than those of the late maturing entries and the check variety, UPL-Ct-2. Correlation and path-coefficient analyses revealed that number of bolls was significantly and positively correlated with per cent crop harvested 1, 2, and 3. Number of sympodial branches and dry weight of reproductive forms were also positively associated with seedcotton yield. Other characters such as leaf area index, dry weight of the stems, total dry matter yield, weight per boll and percent lint recovery were negatively correlated with seedcotton yield and earliness parameters. These characters were found to have negative direct and indirect effects on seed cotton yield and earliness parameters
