Quality of surface and ground water in acid sulfate soils

In order to ascertain on quality of water in acid sulfate soils, water samples from irrigation canals, surface waters, and ground waters at 50-100 cm depth were collected every month from September to December 1979, and analysed for physical and chemical properties in laboratory. Analytical methods refered to APHA (1971) and Perkin-Elmer (1968). The soluble salt contents of the surface water was higher than ground water, and the soluble salt contents of the ground water were highly correlated with the depth of water sampling. It was noteworthy that the content of the base components from the irrigation canals at Nongsuar and Thanyaburi were rather high. Its effect as neutralizing agent on H+ ions were enormous. The bicarbonate contents of the water at those areas were equivalent to 274 kg/ha of pure slaked lime for each cropping. More over, the content of cations in the ground water was matched by the content of sulfate. Ferrous content in ground water at Nongsuar was higher than at Ongkharak, the accumulation of pyrite at Nongsuar was higher thean at Ongkharak, however, the Al content in these two areas more or less the same.
