Responses of groundnut cultivar Khon Kaen 60-1 to native rhizobium strains

Strains were different in nodule formation and nitrogen fixation in groundnut cultivar Khon Kaen 60-1. In general, Rhizobium inoculation increased all characters measured over the uninoculated control. The standard strain THA205 was found to be the best among the strains tested. This strain gave the highest values of nitrogenase activity, total dry weight, percentages of nitrogen in shoot, nitrogen content in shoot, total nitrogen content and leaf colour score. Some of the native Rhizobium strains were as efficient as the standard strain THA205. These strains were NE7, NE10, NE29, NE23, NE15 and NE55. The first four strains were classified in Zero group while the latter two strains were in THA205-NC92 group. The treatments inoculated with the effective strains were not different from that received N fertilizer (240 ppm. N). These effective Rhizobium strains could fix sufficient atmospheric nitrogen for the requirement of the groundnut cultivar Khon Kaen 60-1. The significant positive correlations found among all the characters measured imply that they are good parameters for measuring the Rhizobium strain effectiveness. Which characters should be employed as the evaluation criteria will depend on the facilities available in a particular laboratory.
