[Furazolidone toxicity in fattering pigs]

Furazolidone toxicity was studied in fattering pigs with the daily doses of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w. Apart from the observation of clinical signs, hematological values also measured the CNS disturbance showing firstly muscle incoordination, goose steping, tonoclonic convulsion and spasm of the entire muscular system. When medication was discontinued the animals recovered spontaneously within 1-2 days. The main hemotoxicity was thrombocytopenia and was observed in all pigs at all levels of medication. Additionally, one of the 3 pigs in the 10 mg/kg b.w. group was observed to have subcutaneous hemorrhage similar to that observed by other researchers with dairy calves
