Control of onion purple blotch by soil fungi

Seven soil fungal antagonists of Alternaria porri (Ellis) Cifferri on Czapek agar, Aspergillus 3 isolates, Curvularia 1 isolate, Fusidium 1 isolate and Penicillium 2 isolates, were tested in field condition to find out the effect of biological control agents on onion purple blotch by inoculating both of antagonist and pathogen on artificial leaf lesion. All tested antagonists could reduce the disease incidence varied from 17.86 to 64.29 %. Two isolates, (Aspergillus sp. (7.5) and Aspergillus sp. (6.14) that provide high protection against the disease were selected to study the efficacy both in the sole and combination to compare with two fungicides that had been reported to be highly efficient in purple blotch control, mancozeb (Dithane M-45) and captafol (Difolatan 80), by soaking the onion seedings in the suspension of each control agent before growing in soil infested with the pathogen. All treatments caused a reduction in disease incidence varied from 64.00-92.00 %. Combination of selective antagonists treatment (1:1) showed the most effective in disease control (92.01 %) and both of tested fungicides showed the less effective in disease control (64.00 %). However statistical analysis of the results showed no significant differences in disease control (P=0.05) between antagonists and fungicides.
