Effects of planting date on yield of groundnut under upland conditions

Study on the effects of planting date on yields of CES 101 groundnut under upland conditions was conducted at Nong Khew Village, Chiang Dao, Chialnd Mai during July to November 1987. A split plot design was used in this study. Two fertilizer treatments (16-20-0 at 25 kg/rai and no fertilization) were main-plots and four planting dates (beginning of July (PD 1), mid July (PD 2) , beginning of August (PD 3), and mid August (PD 4) were sub-plots. Seed yield of CES 101 groundnut was markedly reduced when planting was delayed. Mean seed dry weights obtained from PD 1, PD 2, PD 3 and PD 4 were 170.3, 184.9, 139.3 and 108.3 kg/rai, respectively. Fertilizer increased yield of groundnut significantly. The average seed yield received from fertilized and non-fertilized plots were 169.5 and 131.8 kg/rai, respectively. Analysis of groundnut yield components and shelling percentage revealed that planting date had significant effects on number of pod per hill and grain weight. Planting groundnut after July resulted in a reduction of pod number and seed weight. Fertilizer was also found to increase number of pod per hill.
