Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) is a phytoreovirus that causes severe disease symptoms and economic loss in rice production of Thailand. The virus has a genome comprised of 10 double stranded RNA segments ranging in size from 0.5 to 2.5 Md. The virus replicates in both rice and its planthopper vector, Nilaparvata lugens. Our research plan is to clone and sequence the RRSV genome, identify the structural protein genes, gene construction and transform to rice plant and then test for the virus resistance. This approach has been found effective against a number of plant viruses.
