[Blue-green algae and nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of rice in saline soil]

Pot experiment was conducted to determine the effect of blue-green algae and nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of rice variety RD 7 grown on Kula Ronghai soil series. Pots were arranged in randomized complete block design and consisted of 6 treatments in 4 replications. The treatments included the application of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) at levels of 30 and 60 Kg N/rai with and without blue-green algae, a mixture of Anabaena sp., Nostoc sp., Hapalosiphon sp. No.697 and Stigonema sp. No.617. Results indicate that: 1) the experimented rice plants significantly responded to the use of algal fertilizer and N-fertilizer in saline soil. 2) Growth of inoculated blue-green algae was satisfactory in saline soils. The nitrogen content in straw, the grain yields and the protein content of rice grain were increased significantly in algalized pots. Grain yields increased from 5.13 to 6.05 g in pots with algal biofertilizer. The protein content of rice grain increased from 8.29 to 10.64 %. 3) The combination of algal biofertilizer and nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased rice yield more than the application of nitrogen fertilizer alone. Application of 30 and 60 kg N/rai in combination with blue-green algae gave grain yields of 11.21 and 8.14 g/pot, compared with 8.79 and 6.78 g/pot obtained by 30 and 60 kg N/rai in absence of algae, respectively.
