Pineapple disease of sugarcane

Soil fungus, Thielaviopsis paradoxa causes a rot of sugarcane cutting. Two types of spores are produced. Microspores, light-brown and cylindriform, are produced endogenously and pushed out of conidiophores in chains. Macrospores are brownish black, thick-walled and elliptical. They are produced in chains on short conidiophore. The cuttings of seven sugarcane varieties were inoculated with T.paradoxa. Germination percentage of affected cuttings decreased. F 140, Q 83, F 137 and F 156 varieties were moderately resistant while Thai 1 U-Thong 1 and Pindar were susceptible. Fungicidal tests for pineapple disease control were also conducted with nine cane varieties. Result showed that dipping cane cuttings in Triadimefon 500 ppm., or benomyl 500 ppm. for 30 minutes or propiconazole 200 ppm. for 15 minutes before planting was an effective control measure.
