Describes the Hamilton's Multiplication Technique of a rapid means to produce banana plants vegetatively under local conditions. Plants selected were two tetraploids, 168-12 and IC2 and one triploid, lacatan. Selected rhizomes were treated with fungicidal/insecticidal dips and placed in various media in black polythene bags and propagating bins. The media used were perlite, sawdust and rice-hull. 168-12 gave the highest number suckers, 13-20 per rhizome in 85 days. In the same period IC2 produced 9-13 while lacatan 8-11 suckers per rhizome respectively. The media that gave the highest number of suckers was the sawdust, followed by the rice-hulls. The lower sucker production in the three cultivars may be attributed to poor aeration in the bags and/or the age at which rhizomes were selected. These results show that a farmer can establish a sucker nursery thereby ensuring clean planting material.
