Influence of plant spacing on yield and quality of Turkish tobacco
1986
Mullika Potikanond (Mae Jo Tobacco Experiment Station, Chiang Mai (Thailand). Agronomy Div.)
Yield of tobacco grown in 40x15 cm. plant spacing plot was higher than those of the others, 296.14 kg./rai of the cured leaf was obtained and was not different from 35x15 cm. plant spacing plot. Yields of treatments 3, 4 and 5 were significantly lower than those of treatments 1 and 2. The chemical constituents of the cured leaf were nicotine content, total nitrogen and reducing sugars were in range of 1.34-1.51, 1.75-1.87 and 15.2-16.89 %, respectively. These previous components were so similar to those of foreign oriental tobacco (Turkey's Smyrna) but resin and wax contents were slightly higher, 10.54-12.33 %. The ratio of reducing sugars/nicotine was in range of 10.27-11.85.
