Survey of groundnut insect pests in farmers' fields

During the dry season of 1988, six trips were made to survey insect pests of groundnut in Kalasin (5 times), Khon Kaen (1 time), Mahasarakham (2 times), Roi-et (3 times) and Ubon Rachathani (1 time). These trips were made on 4-5 February, 10 February, 23 March, 21-23 April, 27 April, and 29 April 1988. The most common insects found were thrips (Frankliniella sp., Scirtothrip dorsalis and Caliothrip indicus) and leafhopper (Empoasca sp.). The symptoms of peanut yellow spot virus and hopperburn were observed in the fields visited. Aphids were found abundantly in Kalasin, Mahasarakham, and Roi-et on the March 23 trip. Spider mite was observed in late dry season in Khon Kaen, Kalasin, and Roi-et. The incidence of spider mite in the Northeast was uncommon except this year when there was a long dry spell. Cutworms (Spodoptera litura) were present in low number during flowering stage. It was also unusual to find leafminer in a very low number. The degree of infestation of soil insects varied among locations, and pod damages of 10-13 % were found at Kalasin.
