Discusses the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which was signed in Washington on 3 Mar 1973 and entered into force on 1 July 1975, with a membership of 112 countries. Its applicability to Uganda is also highlighted with reference to Ugandas' endangered species. The aim of the Convention is to make sure that international trade does not threaten the survival of species of wild animals and plants. Unrestricted commercial exploitation of species is cited as the second major threat to the survival of some species. Species of wild animals and plants are listed in 3 appendices to the convention. Depending on the degree of protection needed, export and import of wild specimens is either prohibited or subjected to uniform licensing requirements
