The objective of the investigation discussed in this paper was to assess the effect of different fertilization systems on the content of some heavy metals in soil taken from long-term field trials. Naturally fertile soils (unfertilized plots) were used for comparison. The contents of Cd, Pb, Ni and Cr in 1 Na2EDTA and 1N HCl extract were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. After 12 and 26 years of field trials established on a chernozem soil, the levels of the four harmful and hazardous elements were within tolerable limits.
