1992
Ushewokunze-Obatolu, U. (Dept. of Veterinary Services, Harare (Zimbabwe). Veterinary Research Laboratory)
The paper reviews the processes by which data are collected and some changes that have been proposed in order to increase the utilisation of data for disease monitoring in the Department of Veterinary Services. The paper describes types of data that animal disease occurrence is measured as morbidity and mortality. Both types of rates are commonly used in monitoring. Such rates are an indication of disease experience as a proportion of the population of certain description over a defined time period. They are convenient summary measures which can be used for comparative assessments to indicate the relative importance of disease problems in subsets of the population. The paper also gives an account of the sources of data; problems and inconsistencies; present needs and improvements under development
