Donkey power: accepted yet neglected
1993
Mhazo, N. (Ministry of Lands, Agriculture and Water Development, Harare (Zimbabwe). Dept. of Agricultural, Technical and Extension Services)
The paper attempts to give credit to a donkey as a potential alternative source of draft power in the event of loss of cattle. The animal has always complemented the work done by cattle even under normal climatic conditions. The 1991/92 cropping season was hard hit by a drought spell that ripped-off thousands of cattle in the small farming areas of Zimbabwe. The small farmers have very little access to tractor technology if one could think of it as an alternative means. Within the farmers reach there is a draft animal that can play a big role and that is a donkey. The donkey has not suffered much although some deaths have been reported. The paper discusses the potential of a donkey to agriculture
