Performance of virus-free local potato cultivars [in Bangladesh]

Eleven virus-free local potato cultivars were studied for field performance during three consecutive years (1985-86 to 1987-88). The virus-free plants showed excellent growth in terms of height, number of stems per hill, number of leaves and branches per plant and average length of each compound leaf compared to those of infected plants. Tuber yield per plant in number and weight was also higher and tuber size in weight was smaller in virus-free plants than those in infected plants. Vegetative growth and tuber yield of virus-free plants were reduced with advancing generations except tuber weight/plant and tuber size which were increased.
