Growth and nitrogen fixation of eight Nostoc isolates from different agroecological zones (AEZ) of Bangladesh were studied under laboratory conditions. Marked variations were observed in growth rate, growth habit and nitrogen fixing capacity among the isolates. Results show that Nostoc H.55 was the fast-growing which was followed by Nostoc H.11 and Nostoc H.54, respectively. In contrast, maximum nitrogen fixation was observed in Nostoc N.54, followed by nostoc H.55 and Nostoc H.11. Out of eight, three isolates (Nostoc H.11, Nostoc H.54 and Nostoc H.55) were capable to grow heterotrophically. The growth of isolates did not appear to have direct correlation with nitrogen fixation.
