An integrated land diagnosis as a basis for a geographic information system with a view to a watershed management. Application to the rio Mangas basin (Ayabaca, Peru)
1994
Cotler, A.H.
Proposal for the sustainable management of watersheds in the Northerh Andes: the morphopedological method and land use analysis as a framework for the study of social systems, have been used interactively at different levels of perception. The application of holistic approach to the rio Mangas basin in the department of Piura in the north-west of Peru, has led to a better understanding of the dynamics of the morphopedological units, bases of the ecosystems and agrosystems, whose morphodynamic impact has been assessed. The confrontation of these units and their land use has highlighted the limitations and the degree of adaptation of these production systems and the strategies implemented by the farmers, expression of their know-how, in the natural environment. A Geographic Information System has been set up for the basin based on information obtained throughout this research with particular attention focused on devising a model for evaluating the potential risks of erosion. Management alternatives derived from the systemic anlysis, take into account the real potentialities of the areas and the needs of the population.
