Analysis of sport performance of Chilean horse race. 1. Effects of sex, age and studied periods

In order to evaluate and characterize the sport performance of Chilean horse race to complete the characterization of this race, 25,418 registers were analyzed corresponding to 5.500 individualized products of the three first places obtained in the "corridas de vaca" from 1952 to 1990. The main studied variables were sex, age, time and scores obtained in the competition called "rodeos". The results demonstrate that the most used animals in this type of competition, are horses (38.7%), followed by mares (32.5%) and finally stallions (28.6%). Nevertheless, on considering the whole number of prized animals, females are better represented (41.3%) followed by horses (29.4%) and stallion (19.2%). The participation of animals reached its maximum value between 8 and 11 years of age, considering data of a period from 4 to 25 years. The highest average scores 2,27 +-1,36 corresponded to ages from 8 to 9 years. The average score values of sport performance were 2.16 +- 1.0 horses, 2.23 +- 1,31 for mares and 2,30 +- 1,41 for stallions. It was observed a scarce number of breeder progeny with prized participation. Only 1 or 2 of the 62% of male breeders were with progeny. This percentage is higher in females reaching 88%. Only one of the studied female has seven descendants with prized participation. Considering the scores reached by animals in its multiple participation, in a range from 1 to 167 points, 52% products were located in the lowest place (from 1 to 4 points) meanwhile only 0.8% was over 80 points
