Potato Variety "Mats"
1990
Anderfeld, A. (Estonian Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Saku (Estonia))
The potato variety "Mats" (seedling 388-75) has been developed at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Station, and was selected from a cross between "Ando" and seedling 886-63. "Mats" is a mediumlate table and industrial potato variety with a relatively high and constant yield. It is superior to "Sulev", comparable with "Eba", but lower than "Vigri" in tuber yield. The starch content of tubers is higher than that of the other mediumlate potato varieties currently being cultivated in Estonia. The culinary properties are superior to "Sulev", and comparable with "Eba" and "Vigri". "Mats" is resistant to potato wart, relatively resistant to virus diseases, and has a medium level of resistance on foliage to Phytophthora. Storage tests have generally shown low weight losses and little pressure bruising. "Mats" may be recommended to supplement the assortment of mediumlate varieties as a good table and industrial potato suitable for mechanical cultivation
