Studies on Leaf Blight (Exserohilum turcicum (pass.) Leonard and Suggs) and Evaluation of Maize Germplasm for Resistance to the Diseases in Ethiopia
1994
Asefa Teferi (IAR, Addis Abeba (Ethiopia))
Three maize varieties (resistant, susceptible and tolerant) were assessed for yield loss under natural and artificial Turcicum leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum (pass.) Leonard and Suggs) infections. The experiment was carried out in the field at Bako Research Center for the years 1992 and 1993. Disease rating was made on a whole plant basis. Disease development, the effect of the disease on yield and yield components and the relationship of turicicum leaf blight with common rust and stalk and ear rots were evaluated. Severity of turcicum leaf blight varies between years, variety and crop growth stages. Under artificial infection, the susceptible variety Pool 32 C19 had a mean yield loss of 49.78 percent. Higher effects of the disease on yield lied between 28-35 days after inoculation (2-3 weeks after silking).
