Herbicide Use in Small Cereals in the State Farms

Wheat and barley are grown on a large scale State Farms in Arsi and Bale Regions of Southern Ethiopia. Weeds being one of the limiting factors of wheat and barely production, their control has never been easy in the State Farms. Seedbed preparation plays an important role in large scale farming of wheat and barley. A number of problems have been encountered during seedbed preparation, such as weather conditions, shortage of appropriate machinery, overlapping of different farm activities and the likes. Herbicides are an essential component of wheat and barley production. Repeated use of phenoxy type herbicides to wheat and barley fields has resulted in the shift of the weed flora to resistant annual grass weeds and to some tolerant broadleaved species. Consequently, herbicide usage has also shifted, towards more expensive broad-spectrum grass and broadleaf herbicides.
