Epidemiological studies on contagious agalactia of sheep and goats in Chalkidiki

The aim of the present work was the detection of M. agalactiae antibodies in flocks of sheep and goats. Totally, 159 serum samples from sheep and 327 from goats were taken, belonging to 11 and 17 sheep and goat flocks respectively. Fifteen of the flocks had been affected by contagious agalactia (CA) in the past, while the history of the rest was unknown. All sera were examines by FIT and ELISA (lgG). Antibodies were detected by FIT or/and ELISA in 188 serum samples, coming from 19 flocks, 14 of which had been affected by CA in the past. Specifically, antibodies were detected by: both FIT and ELISA in 88 (18%) sera from 14 flocks, only FIT in 86 (18%) sera from 17 flocks and only ELISA in 14 (3%) sera form 9 flocks. The two tests gave the same results, either positive or negative, in 79% of the sera. Antibodies were detected in goat flocks that had been affected by CA up to 8 years before sampling and in sheep up to 40 months before sampling. The percentage of positive results by both tests in goats was higher (FIT 44% and ELISA 23%) than that in sheep (FIT 19% and ELISA 17%).
