Effects of oestrus detection failure on fertility of high yielding dairy cattle

From the study of management procedures applied in 14 dairy herds it followed that reproductive management is carried out improperly since the methods used are, to a large extent, unacceptable, the most widespread being the use of bulls with doubtful genetic composition for mating. Detailed study of data collected over a period of 12 months in 3 herds comprising each 40-60 high yielding (over 6500 l) imported cows, owned by professional breeders, confirmed the fact that inadequate reproductive performance was attributed mainly to inability to have the animals served at the proper time, owing to missed or unobserved oestrus periods. The application of a reproductive management program in the above herds improved the relevant reproductive indices within a rather short period of time. This fact leads to the conclusion that cattle breeding in the area can be successfully upgraded by extensive application of such reproductive management programs.
