The feed mix industry is faced with ever increasing demands from animal breeders. 48-76 o/o of the costs of animal products derives from feed mix expenses. Some trends in the industry are the following: More kinds of raw material is used; the hydrothermic treatment is being introduced; more accurate measurment and dosage; improving granule quality; controlled milling of raw materials; reducing contamination to minimum; searching for energy saving technologies; automated processes; reducing losses and emission of dust, noise, and waste water; improving labour safety conditions. Two kinds of equipments can be used for the milling process. The hammer mill is simple to operate, uses very much energy, the loss of heat is significant, and the granulometric composition of its final product is wide (from small to large granules). The roller mill is more complicated to operate, but it uses less energy, its loss of heat is negligible, and the granulometric composition is narrow (from middle to large size granules). The advantages of the two milling equipments can be combined to achieve optimal granulometric composition. Separate milling of different raw materials is advised. Use only roller mill if coarse middling is required and use roller mill and hammer mill when fine granules are desired
