Granulation and expansion processes
1993
Wetzel, W.
The trends in feed industry are the increase in the size of the individual factories, higher energy consumption, longer manufacturing process and better quality. New methods such as double pressing and expansion has been already introduced. Another novelty is the hydraulic gap adjustment between the rollers which enables the manufacturer to better control the quality of the product. It also lowers the energy consumption and makes the whole process more flexible. Double granulation improves the quality of the product, and it can be used flexibly for different types of products. A combination of pressing and expansion further increases the firmness of the granules. Experiments have shown that the different manufacturing methods don't affect the feed conversion efficiency of the animals. There are more possibilities in modernizing the cooling process and the after-cooling treatment. Supplements that are not heat resistant (like enzymes) or would make the granules softer (like fats) can be added to the feed after it is cold
