Studies on fruit productivity and enhancement of photosynthesis in citrus trees

Citrus cultivation is a very important industry in the hilly regions of south-western Japan, especially on the island of shikoku, where about 25% of Japan's citrus fruit is produced. However, the area under citrus decreased after the decision to liberalize orange imports. Accordingly, higher quality and constant yield of citrus are required in these districts. It is necessary to investigate shortly the physiological mechanism sustaining high production and high quality of fruit. However, characteristics of photosynthesis and respiration of citrus tree are not yet clearly understood, although they are very important physiological factors for improvement of productivity in crops. In this paper, therefore, the author has attempted to determine the characteristics of photosynthesis in citrus trees, and investigate the relation between photosynthesis and fruit production. The characteristics of photosynthesis in isolated mesophyll protoplasts and in leaves of citrus were determined, and some cultural methods for the enhancement of photosynthesis were investigated. The effects of various stress on citrus trees were assessed quantitatively by measuring the reduction of photosynthesis. The relation between photosynthesis and fruit production was also investigated and discussed through the analysis of characteristics of photosynthesis in highly productive trees cultivated in plastic greenhouses
