The paper reviews the major fisheries research activities of Kainji Lake Research Institute under the old mandate. The aquaculture activities expected of the institute (NIFFR) under the new mandate are highlighted. The findings from aquaculture activities of the institute (both as KLRI and NIFFR) are updated. The strategy for aquaculture research and development towards making NIFFR a centre of excellence for contributing to increased fish production in Nigeria is discussed
