Powdery scab (Spongospora subterranea) of white potato: survey, screening for resistance and control

A survey on powdery scab incidence was made from September 1990 to July 1991 in major potato production areas at Atok and Buguias in Benguet Province [Philippines]. Powdery scab was found to be distributed in all the survey areas. Abundant moisture and low temperature in these areas contributed to disease occurrence. Disease incidence was also recorded in stored potatoes and it ranged from 2 to 3 (where 0 is symptomless and 4 is heavy infection). Studies on potato disease reactions and fungicide effects on powdery scab were conducted in greenhouse (La Trinidad) followed by field experiments at BPI Potato Seed Farm (Buguias). Soil temperature ranged from 15 to 20 deg C and soil moisture ranged from 17 to 23 percent throughout the season. Out of 30 potato cultivars and clones, BW-5 showed zero infection; Yungay, P-2, Pacena, P005-595, G-5, P-3 and Cosima had low scab incidence; while all others such as Granola, Baraka, Diamat, I-1039 and LBR 1-5 had very high infection. Soil treatment with most of the fungicides used was found to be effective in controlling the disease
