Alleviating drought and intensifying cropping with on-farm reservoirs

An indigenous technology called on-farm reservoir (OFR) which had been found economically viable by researchers at IRRI is now being promoted by the Philippine government. Among the benefits that can be derived from using OFRs are: 1) supplementary irrigation during the rainy season, 2) source of water for a second crop and/or fish culture and 3) soil conservation. An OFR optimization model had been developed at IRRI with the objective of maximizing returns from using OFR water. The model, which uses several operations research techniques like linear programming, simulation and decision tree analysis, has been found to perform satisfactorily. However, it is somewhat difficult to use even at the level of extension workers. A simpler tool has been developed in the form of a nomograph which allows practical use of the model. This nomograph helps the farmers in deciding what crop(s) to plant and the area to cultivate for particular crop(s) in order to maximize profit
