The development of a global system of sweetpotato cultivar development, and efforts by CIP to further that end is described in this paper. This system aims to provide farmers with cultivars which combine suitable quality characteristics for various end-uses, agronomic traits and resistances to diseases, pests and abiotic stress required in distinct regions of the world. It entails a collaborative effort by international centers, and research and development programs in developing and developed countries. It involves the active participation of producers, processors, and consumers, as well as scientists from different disciplines
