Approaches in characterization of a site using agroclimatic information

Thirty years of daily radiation, temperature, and rainfall data from Los Banos [Laguna, Philippines] were analyzed to describe the rice growing environment in the area. An apparent graduate decline in the amount of incident radiation was insignificant. The distribution of minimum temperature was more stable than that of maximum temperature. Over the period considered, night time temperature slowly increased by as much as 1.5 deg C in Aug 1991. The results indicated that the energy supply for photosynthetic activity was unchanged, but the minimum temperatures could induce the dark respiration rate. As with many tropical areas, Los Banos had been dominated by rainfall. Distinct dry and wet seasons characterized the area. Rainfall onset varied between May 12 and until July 2, and receded in about 6 months later. Farmers could start transplanting their rice crop using 200 mm of rain which could be expected in the third decade of June with 80 percent probability. Establishing relationships between crop yields and weather is not easy. Crop yield data do not match the climatological data in time and in space. Climatological data were widely available, through quality and appropriateness for agriculture are rarely perfect. The suggested methodology offers more practical information researchers could see
