Use of tissue culture for corn improvement
1994
Cantoy, R.P.T. II (Cebu City National Science High School, Cebu City (Philippines))
Embryos from immature IPB Var 4 corn (12 days after pollination) were excised and inoculated in corn callus induction media. Immature embryos yielded embryogenic callus which has been classified into Type E and Type 2E. Type IE callus is not capable of plant regeneration. Type 2E callus is capable of plant regeneration. The weight of calli was taken to determine their growth and number of plants regenerated per gram fresh weight of callus. One gram of fresh callus yielded 30-40 plantlets after being subjected to various culture media. Corn plantlets ready for potting-out had upright leaves, a well-developed root system, and had the normal physical characteristics of a young corn plant
