Performance of pre-weaned piglets fed processed corn with varying levels of extruded full-fat soybeans

Feed consumption of piglets showed that roasted corn with 10 percent FFSB [full-fat soybeans] was the most preferred among the 7 diets from 8 to 28 days feeding. Generally, piglets fed diets with roasted corn had higher feed consumption than those fed with autoclaved corn and control diet. Piglets fed with 10 percent FFSB had higher feed consumption than those fed without FFSB, with 5 percent FFSB and control diet. Piglets fed roasted corn with 5 percent and 10 percent FFSB and autoclaved corn with 10 percent FFSB were the highest in total weight gain among the 7 groups from 8 to 28 days of feeding. Generally, piglets fed with roasted corn had higher total weight gain than those fed with autoclaved corn and control diet. Regardless of method of corn processing, there was a trend of higher total weight gain (8 to 28 days of age) as the level of FFSB was increased to 10 percent. Piglets fed roasted and autoclaved corn with 10 percent FFSB had the lowest 3-week average incidence of scouring. Piglets fed roasted corn reduced the 3-week average incidence of scouring lower than those fed autoclaved corn and control diet. There was a trend of lower 3-week average incidence of scouring as the level of FFSB was increased in the diet. Regardless of the level of FFSB, incidence of scouring showed that feeding roasted corn reduced the incidence of scouring lower than autoclaved corn and the control diet. Addition of 10 percent FFSB reduced the incidence of scouring lower than those fed diets without FFSB, with 5 percent FFSB, and control diet. Duration of scouring of piglets showed that there was a trend of reduced scouring days as the level of FFSB was increased in both diets with roasted and autoclaved corn. Autoclaving reduced the duration of scouring better than roasting of corn and control diet. Addition of FFSB progressively reduced the duration of scouring of piglets. However, only those fed diets with 10 percent FFSB had a duration that was shorter than those fed with the control diet. No significant differences (P0.05) were obtained in the performance of piglets
