Extraction and characterization of carrageenan from canotcanot (Eucheuma spp.)
1994
Bueno, Ma. J.L.
Extraction of the refined carrageenan from Eucheuma cotonii yielded 23.2 percent and 16.4 percent from E. spinosum. For the semi-refined extracts, 24.8 percent was obtained from E. cotonii and 21.3 percent from E. spinosum. The extracts characterized were found to be similar in terms of physical and chemical parameters: including moisture, pH, total ash, minerals and heavy metal contents. Results likewise showed that extracts conformed with the specifications characterizing Philippine Natural Grade (PNG) Carrageenans. Moisture content ranged from 8.26-9.50 percent, pH at 9.42-10.2 percent and total ash from 22.4-46.8 percent. Mineral analyses included sodium level determined at 30.8 and 32.1 mg/100 gms for the semi-refined extract and 261 and 246 mg/100 gms for the refined extract. Potassium values were measured from 50.9 and 69.8 mg/100 gms for the refined sample and 72.6-78.5 mg/100 gms for the semi-refined extract. Phosporous determination registered a 9.23 and 9.85 value for the semi-refined extract: 10.9 to 14.1 mg/100 gms for the refined sample. Calcium analyses showed a 1.93-3.22 mg/100 gms content in the extracts obtained. Both the refined and semi-refined extracts were negative for heavy metals, particularly in mercury and lead. Parameters differentiating the extracts included viscosity, gel strength, infrared and fractionation analyses
